History

Sukanta Mahavidyalaya, Dhupguri, Jalpaiguri is a Government aided, NAAC accredited higher education institution which started its academic journey on 25September 1981. This academic institution is one of the pioneering higher education institutions of North Bengal as well as of West Bengal, catering to the need of education for students hailing from the enigmatic Dooars. Enveloped by lush green fields in the outskirts of Dooars, Sukanta Mahavidyalaya is also an epitome of attraction because of the panoramic view of the surrounding area which soothes a heart tired of the city pent.

Spanning over 10 acres of land, this college offers courses in Humanities and Science (General and Honours) in 14 disciplines at the undergraduate level. This college provides accommodation to around 6000 students mostly hailing from surrounding areas. While the college follows the curriculum of the University of North Bengal, since 2018 the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) has been introduced in the undergraduate studies of this college.

Apart from regular undergraduate courses, this higher education institution also coordinates the teaching of postgraduate courses in the distance education mode under the aegis of the Directorate of Distance Education, Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata. It has been actively in operation at this college since 2004. Recently Netaji Subhas Open University (NSOU) has also opened its study-centre at this college branch for teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the distance education mode.

The college has six ICT enabled classrooms, one virtual classroom. Students and staff of the college avail free Wi-Fi services within the campus.

The library of Sukanta Mahavidyalaya is proud with its prestigious collection of around fifty thousand books. This is undoubtedly one of the best in its collection in any of the colleges affiliated to the University of North Bengal. Various reputed national and international journals can be accessed through Inflibnet. The library uses ‘Koha’ software facilitating the student for an easy search of a book of his/her choice.

The college has a large playground where various college – level and state – level games and sports and tournaments are held. There is a gymnasium at the Department of Physical Education, with modern equipments endeavouring towards the physical and mental development of the students. The enticing flower garden at one corner of the playground and the growth of different medicinal plants bordering the playground around contributes to a scenic view of the place. Such an idyllic location offers an ideal academic ambience attracting large number of enthusiastic students who regularly attend this seat of knowledge and education to be conscientious citizens of India through their ever-widening thought and action.

Adjacent to the main building, the college houses Rabindra Sabha Kakshya where various kinds of celebrations, seminars and conferences, extension lectures are held regularly for the enrichment of the students as well as the faculty members. The Sabha Kakshya, equipped with the advanced sound system appends to the glorious legacy of this higher education institution.

Besides the necessary infrastructure, the college has 82 experienced and dedicated teachers and 30 support staff to facilitate the enrichment of our students in every possible way. The teaching and non-teaching staff accomplish their responsibilitieswith sheer dedication and sincerity in order to enable the students to be responsible citizens of the country by following the principles of honest labour and sincere respect to explore the true realms of knowledge.
